While the social care field is made up of a wide range of individuals, it is favored by women. Most care workers are women, but the percentage of men entering the field is growing as there are almost always vacancies, a rare find in today’s tight job market. This is not to say that the men choosing to work as a care worker could not find employment anywhere else, some feel a genuine calling to make a difference in someone’s life.

In my opinion, and considerable experience in the field, older individuals are better suited to social care type work, especially with geriatric clients. The young have not yet learned to empathize with older people as a young person typically has not has an major health problems yet. It takes a certain kind of empathy to understand that your clients cannot walk as fast as you can, and they cannot see as well. Patience comes with age and experience.

With the proper training, some young people make an excellent care worker. The training is essential, I personally was in a class where we fed each other an entire meal. It teaches you proper techniques quickly when you are the person confined to a bed. Also, the elderly like young faces, full of enthusiasm.

Basically, anyone with empathy, the proper training, and a genuine desire to do the job of a care worker will make an excellent addition to a staff, but experience, even life experience caring for a family member, is the most valuable asset.
