During pregnancy, your body experiences hormonal revolution full of peaks and slopes, which – unfortunately – because a lot of pregnancy symptoms at all glamorous, such as nausea, cravings and fatigue. And just in case this was no longer too, and these hormones can also get to leave traces in the appearance of the skin of pregnant women – which does not help the fragile state of the body image of women who are expecting a baby . That is why maintaining a proper skin care is so important. Before you plunge your head in the sand should be informed about what you can do to make your skin look so fabulous and fresh as you feel.

Acne and oily skin
Those women who have naturally oily skin or acne-prone should become aware that your skin will become more prone to imbalances in the course of pregnancy. These skin conditions worse, because all these hormones are unbalanced and changing during pregnancy – and more specifically, due to increased androgen levels (these being the same hormones that cause imbalances before menstrual periods). And since the androgen reaches its peak during the first quarter, the early stages of pregnancy will probably be times when you notice the biggest changes in your skin.

To control these imbalances, however, may not use the same products for skin care and acne as it did before getting pregnant, so it would be best to replace them with other specially formulated for pregnant women. In fact, any medication prescribed to cure acne, as well as counter medications that contain vitamin A, retinol or antibiotics should be avoided during pregnancy.

Care Products and Skin Cleaning
Avoid cleaning products to skin (as well as any kind of moisturizers or cosmetics) containing chemical exfoliants such as salicylic acid, glycolic and alpha hydroxy acids or beta – especially during the first quarter. Instead, use exfoliating products manuals (or scrubs that actually contain very soft scrubbers to be applied manually by circling his face) in order to remove all traces of dead skin. If after the first quarter imbalances are still prevalent, you should consult with your obstetrician about the safest given its current state.

Moisturizing and Sun Protection
Stay away from moisturizing soaps or any kind of product for skin care that does not have specifically indicated on the label the word “anti-comedogenic” or “anti acne”. On the other hand, should look for products for skin care “oil-free.” Hint: If you have an oily skin too – especially – during the day, you should have on hand blotters or paper towels to fixed quickly.

Dry Skin
Dry skin during pregnancy is usually caused by a significant loss of body fluids. This is because your body literally absorbs all the liquid has, which is extremely important for the hydration of your growing baby. In fact, their claims of bodily fluids each day will be higher, so it will be almost impossible to keep hydrated the skin of his face and limbs. That is why in addition to regular care routine that will dispense your skin, be sure to drink gallons of water – 8 glasses a day to be precise!.

Care and Cleaning
In order to avoid excessive dry skin, you should clean your face twice a day with a cleanser specially formulated for dry skin. Women who have extremely dry skin should try to use manual exfoliating once a week to prevent the formation of flakes in it.
Moisturizers and sunscreens When you need to moisturize, you should choose an emollient that has wetting agents – and should not skimp on sunscreen use, sun exposure not only worsen the dryness of your skin, but also run the risk of developing or developing skin cancer. People who experience itching or itchy skin dryness as a result of it’s own should avoid using creams or ointments to neutralize it, which often contain cortisone or hydrocortisone. Although not scientifically proven that these medical ingredients are harmful to health, many medical studies have not been checked for safety

Cosmetics Last Time Arrangements
It can be very tempting to apply foundation and concealers in areas where it appeared the outbreak of acne, but do not abuse this kind of beauty products. Instead, use good quality cosmetics, as these – so generally last longer and do not need to be altered to obtain optimal results. Try using a foundation that in turn act as a concealer – this will give the combined effect of having a more even skin tone and dark circles and imperfections less visible. Control excess oil using a matte powder hue, while those women who have dry skin should try using cream blush to add extra light to your face.

Give a finishing touch to your makeup, apply a generous amount of lipstick or lip balm moisturizer and then apply a mask, and ready to go out and have fun!.

Keep in mind some tips of what should and should not do during pregnancy when you go to makeup.

• Use moisturizing cream to moisturize your skin color.
• Put a little blush on the cheekbones to remove your face.
• To hide the wrinkles and crow’s feet, fine-textured base used powders and transparent.
• To reduce the continuous flushing effect that is generated during pregnancy because of the increased blood volume, we recommend applying a base matte pink beige without your fingers and apply a few dots on your cheeks and transparent powders applied over.
• To remove oily skin , use a lotion based on water and fat-free basis, then apply transparent powders which are the brightest areas.
• hypoallergenic cosmetics. Before aplicártelo, you should test them on the inside of your arm, so as to rule out allergic reactions.

You must be careful when using cosmetics and beauty products that contain chemicals that could harm your baby in different ways: While the cosmetics may be safe in a normal woman, but the chemicals can have dangerous side effects in pregnant women.

Creams with retinol

Retinoids are powerful agents in creams and anti-aging moisturizers. Retinoids are also found in the creams for acne and are not safe during pregnancy, and that retinol is a precursor of vitamin A, which aids in cell growth and regeneration.

The products of skin care that contain retinoids affect the health of an unborn child. The effects are quite serious if expectant mothers are exposed to oral retinoids such as isotretinoin, as they may cause birth defects in an infant.

While conducting pedicures and manicures, the extensive use of nail polish remover and it is common practice, it is true that they contain acetone and ethanol vapors released. These vapors, when inhaled by pregnant women can affect fetal development.

A campaign conducted by a group of American women has revealed the amount of chemicals harmful to health present in many cosmetics and fragrances.

This has caused concern because animal studies showed that these substances can be highly carcinogenic and can weaken the immune system, decrease fertility and sexual hormones, causing abortion and involuntary birth defects. Most of the chemicals found in this report have not been evaluated by any government agency responsible for review and self-monitoring of the cosmetics industry.

A campaign initiated by a group of women belonging to groups of public health, ecology and rights of consumers in the U.S., has been shown the health risks posed by the use of perfumes and cosmetics.

The campaign, called ” Not so sexy “defends the use of safe cosmetics. To this end, it commissioned an independent laboratory to conduct a study that analyzed the content of 17 fragrances and compare as indicated on the label of the product. This study revealed that in these fragrances were a number of synthetic chemical compounds associated with diseases like cancer, the infertility and birth defects, which were not included in the composition of the label.

This fact has been revealed the loophole in the law that allows federal American companies consider fragrances as trade secrets.

Among the compounds found were detected sensitizing chemicals associated with allergic reactions such as asthma , headaches and contact dermatitis. Products were also found to cause changes in some hormones related to a range of health effects, including damage to sperm, thyroid disorders and cancer. In some cases, have been associated with abortions and fetal deaths.

In addition to perfumes, these harmful substances found in other cosmetics such as shower gels, creams, deodorants, toothpaste and lipsticks.

In many of these products as well as compounds are toxic, particles called nanoparticles. These substances are being used with increasing frequency in personal hygiene products hardly know the effect it can have on people’s health. Scientific research conducted to date show that some nanoparticles can be toxic to human tissue and cause DNA mutations and cell death. At present there is no law regulating the use of these components but there are several countries that have restricted its use until its effects are well known.

Chemical compounds that can be found in homes and businesses in the United States total more than 83,000. In most cases, little is known about the effects they can have during pregnancy (1). However, it was found that a small number of them are harmful to the fetus. These are mainly in the workplace, but certain environmental pollutants in the air and water, and some household chemicals can also pose a risk during pregnancy.

The pregnant woman can inhale these chemicals, ingest them in food or drink, or in some cases, absorbed through the skin. But in general, would be exposed to a lot and for a long time to arrive to harm your baby.

Most companies have appropriate preventive measures to ensure this does not happen. However, because little is known about the effects of most chemicals on reproduction, it is recommended that women consult their physician if exposed to any of them in their work, preferably before pregnancy . Along with your doctor can determine if you need some additional protection at work or if you should switch tasks. This is particularly important for women working in certain industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, dry cleaning, printing, manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and health care.

Pregnant women also can take steps to protect themselves and their babies from pollutants and potentially harmful chemicals used in your home.

There are many myths about the use of cosmetics during pregnancy we often scared and confused.

But we know that not all cosmetics are safe and that any drug or applied to the skin and mucous membranes are absorbed into the blood-feeding and therefore may also affect the fetus.

For example, it recommends the use of creams indicated for skin aging from the sun in its composition containing retinol or derivatives, as has been shown that retinoids administered orally, are associated with the appearance of numerous malformations in the fetus. sunscreens pose no risk because they are kept in the surface layer of the skin and its absorption is minimal. By contrast, pregnant women should use a high protective factor to prevent the emergence of so-called chloasma gravidarum (dark spots that appear on the skin).

The deodorants can be used, except those containing aluminum salts are used for large surfaces such as hands or feet. Perfumes not do any harm to the fetus.

The make-up and masks are also harmless to the developing fetus.

Hair dyes can be used during pregnancy unless the so-called progressive (mostly used by men), which may contain lead salts.

Finally, there is no evidence that the use of chemical hair straightening or curling produce effects on the fetus or newborn.

Since it is a topic of some concern, let’s see what those changes, and what we can do to mitigate the aesthetic effects not so flattering – beyond the important thing in pregnancy is the baby, women do not stop being concerned about our appearance – So, 90% of pregnant women have changes in skin pigmentation, especially darkening around the navel, genitals, breast areola, armpits and inner thighs, from the first quarter.

All this is because at this stage increases estrogen, progesterone and the melanocyte-stimulating hormone and glucocorticoids, that affect skin color. About half of mothers also suffer from melasma / chloasma, dark patches on the face, especially on the cheeks, upper lip or forehead. As worsens with sun exposure, you have to watch much of the sun at this stage. In 13% of pregnant women and new moles may appear in 15% change their size or color. It’s nothing to worry about, clarify dermatologists.

In a future post, we will discuss what happens to stretch marks and varicose veins.

Use of drugs during pregnancy
Gestation is a specific condition of women and therefore, the states of health and illness in the mother may be determinants of good prenatal development.

The woman pregnant may suffer any kind of disease is that sometimes it is necessary that the physician has to prescribe drug treatment. According to some studies, it is estimated that about 35% of pregnant women have to take medication, excluding supplements.

In the early sixties it was discovered that a drug, thalidomide, was responsible for the birth of children with severe congenital malformations (absence of limbs, eye abnormalities, heart, etc.).. From then began to study the effect teratogénicode drugs in experimental animals prior to marketing, and developed an epidemiological investigation of the effect of drugs on human fetuses.

It is called teratogens to drugs (or any environmental agent) capable of producing congenital defects, ie, physical deformities, mental or functional.

For any woman who becomes pregnant, the risk of having a child with a birth defect is 2-5%. Teratogenic agents increase the risk of occurrence of certain defects in offspring of women exposed to them. However, we must take into account that the action of teratogens depend on:

The genetic constitution of each individual exposed, ie fetuses there will be more likely to be affected than others.
The time of pregnancy that affect teratogens in pregnancy.
Risks in the different stages of pregnancy
During the first trimester of pregnancy may cause birth defects, since this is when they develop and differentiate the majority of fetal organs and systems.

In the period from conception to implantation (from ovulation to the “first offense”), about two weeks, it is considered that the embryo is very sensitive to the drugs in the absence of circulatory bond between mother and fetus.

Between the third and the eleventh week of pregnancy is considered that the risk is highest.

During the second and third trimester of pregnancy some drugs may affect fetal growth and development.

If given shortly before the end of pregnancy or during childbirth , problems can occur during or affecting the newborn.

What if a pregnant woman becomes ill?
If a pregnant woman has a health problem and is necessary to administer a drug, the physician should perform previously, adequate and individualized risk-benefit assessment, ie:

For example, high fever may cause injury to the fetus, but there are drugs such as paracetamol, can correct it and not harm the fetus.

There are also many drugs, like acetaminophen (Termalgin ®, Efferalgan ®…), that are considered safe for the fetus, which can be used during pregnancy if needed, but always under medical prescription and supervision .

Therefore, the pharmacological treatment of a pregnant woman can only be done by a knowledgeable physician. Self-medication is prohibited, and the change of treatment prescribed by your doctor. This indication of self-medication should not be extended to pharmaceutical advertising, since advertising any of these medicines whose active ingredients are safe during pregnancy has not been proven.

On the other hand, there are some drugs whose use is not only considered safe during pregnancy but also prevent the occurrence of certain birth defects, as is the case of folic acid . It has been shown that this substance prevents the occurrence of neural tube defects (spina bifida, myelomeningocele, etc.)..

For this preventive effect folic acid should be ingested daily since she decides to get pregnant, to continue once you have become pregnant (long it takes) and continue without interruption until the end of the third month of gestation, unless your doctor feels that it should continue because there are other clinical indications.

On the one hand weigh the risk that the treatment is for the fetus.
And on the other, take into account the risk to the woman and the fetus that let untreated disease.
Facial creams

Being pregnant does not mean to stop caring. In fact, many mornings sure you comes in handy a little extra help from the brush and rouge. Also, the skin can suffer changes and be more sensitive, and generally you will notice more swollen.

However, before using any product, you’d better look at its composition: the things you may not be served before you serve for a few months. According to various studies, some of the components present in products we use every day can be very harmful to the health of your baby.

Here’s a list to start :

-Cellulite creams Depilatory creams : do not know the potential effects on the fetus, but its components are associated with birth defects, so it’s best not to use. Does the alternative? To shave, use a knife. And instead of cellulite, buying a stretch mark cream for pregnancy.

- Retinoids : creams are anti-aging treatments and acne. The effect of oral retinoid treatment has reached the level of abortion, so it is clear that they are an absolute no during pregnancy. Does the alternative? Natural masks you can do at home and creams or soaps without this ingredient. Ask at the pharmacy, they can advise you.

- Hair Dyes : here there is much debate. Some people recommend staying away from dying, others accept dyes without ammonia and others say they have no effect. If you want to be on the safe side, just your natural color Color your before planning to become pregnant, do not ringworm or pick the locks (the dye does not come much in contact with the scalp).

- Phthalates : This chemical is associated with developmental defects and defects in the genitals of children and appears in a thousand places. In fact, you and I probably have some level of phthalates in our bodies … It is likely that more than a cosmetic contains them in your bag (check your nail varnish and your perfumes). So, get rid of containing them and if you miss you colony, better throw it on clothing instead of directly on the skin. By the way, not hot plastic containers in microwave arising phthalates.

- Parabens : shampoos, creams, gels, deodorants … Recent studies parabens can affect the reproductive system of infants and children (they also use creams) because it contains a hormone similar to estrogen. According to some studies, they could be causing girls to develop before. Personally it seems a bit alarmist, but better to be on the safe side, right? The European Union is very strict about use of these substances and cosmetics that you can find in the store are within approved limits.
