Threatened abortion.
The patient is bleeding coming from the uterus, occurring in the first 20 weeks of gestation, there is pain and colic. It is recommended complete rest and use of pain medications. The doctor will order an ultrasound to determine the vitality of the embryo and precise diagnosis and prognosis of abortion .

Abortion in progress.
There are painful uterine contractions, intermittent and progressive dilation and uterine bleeding. In these abortion cases it is important to keep the patient hydrated, given analgesics (pain medications), in some cases the doctor suggests to wait for the expulsion of the fetus naturally and then perform a dilation and curettage (scraping of the uterine wall by an instrument called sharp metal curette).

Missed abortion.
In these cases the embryo dies, but is not expelled and is inside the uterus. Should be suspected in women who show no increase in abdominal size and ultrasound shows no embryonic cardiac activity. Treatment depends on the weeks of gestation and size of the embryo.

Incomplete abortion.
Note the partial expulsion of the embryo and uterine curettage should be performed.

Complete abortion.
There is total expulsion of the embryo or fetus and little bleeding may occur.
